Lilly, Alex, and I have taken advantage of 2, 3 hour drives to really talk since Julian’s accident. We talk a lot, but in the car, there’s nowhere to go and both times we did this we were fresh with emotions.
The first was the drive home from Atlanta after visiting Julian and Jenn at Shepherd. We used that drive to talk openly about everything, how we felt, how we hurt, what we miss, how we will adjust and healing go forward together.
The second was the drive home from the Memorial event. I always try and base my opinion on things a few days, weeks, months after. “Feeling” in the moment is one thing; Feeling as time passes is another. I felt this event last year still now and was hoping it would touch our Family also. The plan after last year especially was to have us all together at the event. We all know though, life doesn’t always go as planned. We adjusted and are fortunate Lilly and Alex made this trip.
We spent 2 days in Maxton with the Memorial 3 Gun Foundation Family. There were no politics, no virus. There was one Flag, and we stood united to Remember, Honor, and Memorialize fallen special operations soldiers. They had family and friends present and a community of patriots supporting an amazing foundation. We stood amongst Families that made the ultimate sacrifice, many 1% er’s, and a community that was proud to be together.
On this drive, we reflected and talked about the truest selflessness, how different stories shared touched each of us, how seeing the flag may look and feel different now, the 1% er’s and what this means, and the privilege and importance of selflessly giving back.
I thought a lot about Julian, but just as those we were recognizing, this weekend was about others, specifically the Families being recognized and this is why we were there this weekend. It was special.
This Foundation has given more back to us than most will ever know, most notably the privilege to be involved with it. There’s just something amazingly powerful of the truest selflessness and unity in purpose.
