Facebook post from Chris on Dec. 15, 2021
I’ve seen different versions of this post over the past couple days, and I’m sharing this one because it really is important and this one in particular is linked to more good messages on a very taboo topic - depression.
Please don’t read into this particular post from me other than to respect the intent of raising awareness and note that it’s okay to talk about and even more important to be aware and sensitive to yourself and those around you.
Coming back to me and our family, most are well versed in what we are navigating. It’s hard and this is an active topic we are really open about. We are fortunate because we’ve got a great network we are comfortable reaching out to including a counselor we really like at Shepherd.
But it’s still hard and we are not alone. Trust that behind the uplifting pictures and stories we share is a tough bumpy path we navigate daily and it’s definitely not all smiles and jokes.
We aren’t alone and we can all help someone else not be.
You never know what’s going on behind the smiles and posts. Particularly over the holidays, but really whenever, reach out to friends and family. Check on them. Don’t judge, don’t assume, and don’t tell. Ask, talk, listen.
You never know the impact of just one smile, one conversation, one genuine moment. A quote I’ve dropped the ball on many times, but is one of my favorites is:
“people never forget how you made them feel”
